This year marked the 115th running of the Boston Marathon. Being one of the, if not the, best-known races in the world, the sidewalks along the racecourse in Boston were crowded. People hoped to catch a glimpse of the winner (who would turn out to be Geoffrey Mutai of Kenya, setting a record for the fastest marathon ever run), cheer on a family member of friend running in the general marathon, or just to take part in the frenzy. I turned my camera toward the crowd for the event. More pictures are available for license and looking at my archive: Spectators at the 2011 Boston Marathon

April 8, 2011, was opening day for the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park in Boston, Massachusetts. I'd always heard Boston was a baseball town, rabid fans loyal in times good and bad. The night before the game, people were camped out on the sidewalks around the park to guarantee a game-day ticket the next day. Mike, who was about 15th in line, told me he and his father had stayed overnight outside Fenway since before he could remember. This time, it was Mike and his friends--they played whiffle ball in an empty parking lot, they tried to stay warm when huddled down on the sidewalk, they got hassled by police for waiting in the wrong place. "It's tradition," Mike told me, "I'll do this with my son eventually." These pictures and more are available for license at my archive: 2011 Red Sox Opening Day

Yesterday I photographed the hoopla surrounding South Boston's St. Patrick's Day Parade. It's an event I've always heard about the event and was excited to see it firsthand, though I've still got some home-state pride for Butte, Montana's St. Patty's parade. 600,000 people gathered in South Boston to watch the St. Patrick's Day Parade, a celebration of the area's Irish heritage. The annual parade is organized by the South Boston Allied War Veterans Council. The parade featured community groups, politicians, firefighters, military groups, and marching bands. Growing up, Showdown Montana was my home mountain. A little hill in the Little Belt Mountains with two chairlifts and the best snow you can find in the US. Frequent powder days and a local crowd make the hill my favorite place to snowboard. There's a third lift now, but it still feels like a small hill in all the right ways. I took my camera to the hill a couple weeks ago. It's always strange seeing a familiar place through the viewfinder, but you see it in a new light. More pictures are available in my archive.

I recently traveled to Whitefish, Montana, to photograph the 2011 Whitefish Skijoring World Championship. I didn't exactly know what skijoring was before I was in Whitefish, so you aren't alone. It's a sport originating in Scandinavia that involves a skier, a horse, and a race course. The skier navigates a course full of jumps while being pulled on a 30-foot rope behind a horse at full gallop. Best time wins the event. Some 80 teams competed in the event this year, and despite the cold, cold weather, everyone had a good time. And the fun wasn't limited to the racing grounds; Whitefish's downtown bars and restaurants were packed with the skijoring crowd. More photos, including these, are available to license at my archive: 2011 Whitefish Skijoring World Championship.
