M. Scott Brauer is a photographer based in Seattle, Washington, USA. He was born in Germany in 1982 to American parents. He grew up in various locations in the US, but calls Montana home.
Brauer graduated with honors from the University of Washington with dual degrees in philosophy and Russian literature and language in 2005.
He interned at Black Star and VII New York in 2005 and for daily newspapers in 2006 and 2007: the Northwest Herald in suburban Chicago, and the Flint Journal in Flint, Michigan. Brauer moved to China in 2007, and returned to the US in 2010. He continues to make periodic trips to Russia, elsewhere in Eastern Europe, and China.
Brauer has been a writer for World Press Photo Witness and the defunct Raw View magazine. He was co-founder, writer, and editor of the now-archived photojournalism blog dvafoto (2006-2016).
He served as the Secretary of the Boston Press Photographers Association, the oldest press and television photographers association in the United States, from 2015 to 2023.
