BG Press Photo Exhibition in Sofia, Bulgaria

In September 2016, I was invited to Sofia, Bulgaria, by BG Press Photo (БГ Прес Фото) for an exhibition of my work, "This is the worst party I've ever been to.", a couple of lectures, and a workshop and portfolio reviews with Bulgarian photographers, all part of Sofia Photo Fest. It was a great opportunity to bring the work to a new audience. We also got a lot of interest about the exhibition from national press. I spoke to print and television reporters from various national outlets. Embedded below are television interviews with bTV, BNT, and others. There were also print interviews with No Comment, the Union of Bulgarian Journalists, and others.

You can see some images from my exhibition here and read a bit about it all (in Bulgarian) at the BG Press Photo website.

Videos of three television appearances are embedded below, as are facebook posts by BG Press Photo with images from various parts of my participation in the festival.

I could not have had a better time in Bulgaria. There is tremendous talent among the ranks of the Bulgarian press photography community and I'm glad for the opportunity to have seen some of it. Special thanks are due to Denislav Stoychev and Tsvetan Tomchev, whose tireless work make the annual festival happen. They're great guys and I'll always cherish the many hours spent talking and laughing with them. Thanks to Bobi Kirilov and Teodor Todorov for the many hours they spent making sure the exhibition and other events went as planned. And I'm very happy to have gotten time to meet Bulgarian photographers such as Hristo Hristov, Rosina Pencheva, Georgi Paleykov, Georgi Kozhuharov, Anastas Tarpanov, Evegeni Dimitrov and others from his agency BulPhoto, Antonio Georgiev-Hadjihristov, Liyana Pandelieva, and many others.

Thanks also to the generous sponsors of everything: BG Press Photo, the US Embassy in Sofia (and especially Tammy Paltchikov with the State Department), Vivacom, Photo Synthesis, and others. The prints in the exhibition were beautiful, and the opening picture (seen at the top of this entry) is the largest I've ever had a photo printed.

Tearsheet: Guns in Time magazine

It's always nice to find a new use for an old picture. In this case, Chelsea from Time needed images of guns for a feature called "The New Politics of Gun Control" (← paywalled). I had some images from a gun range that I photographed during the 2016 New Hampshire presidential primary earlier this year, and it ended up as an almost double-truck in the Sept. 12-19, 2016, issue of Time.

I had a funny way of first seeing the image in print: I was getting on a plane in Zagreb, Croatia, after participating in the Organ Vida Festival, and had been bumped to first class for some reason. The flight attendant asked if I wanted any newspapers, but only had Croatian newspapers. I asked if there were any English-language publications and she disappeared to check. She came back with the International New York Times and a copy of Time magazine containing this story and my picture. I'm not sure I've ever been handed a copy of one of my own pictures quite like that.

Thanks to Chelsea and Croatia Airlines!

Two images in ICP’s Winning the White House exhibition at MANA Contemporary – Sept. 25, 2016 to Jan. 27, 2017

Last month, I had two images in the International Center for Photography-curated exhibition, "Winning the White House: From Press Prints to Selfies," and that exhibition has now moved to the MANA Contemporary in Jersey City, New Jersey, for an extended run from Sept. 25, 2016 to Jan. 27, 2017.

The show features work by Cornell Capa, Grey Villet, Elliott Erwitt, Stephen Crowley, Chris Buck, and many others, and examines presidential politics from the first televised debate between Kennedy and Nixon until now.

You can get more information about the exhibition, including an easy shuttle from Manhattan to the gallery for this weekend's opening, on the ICP website.

Panel Discussion at Photoville: The Presidential Campaign Through New Eyes – Reading the Pictures – Sept. 24, 2016

I just got back home from exhibitions and festivals in Croatia, Bulgaria, and Lithuania, but I'm heading to New York this weekend to take part in a panel discussion at Photoville. Presented by Michael Shaw and Reading the Pictures, the panel is called "The Presidential Campaign Through New Eyes" and will also include Michael Shaw (as moderator), Mark Abramson, Landon Nordeman, Lorie Novak, and Hilary Swift. I've worked alongside Mark, Landon, and Hilary, covered the 2012 campaign a little for Michael at Reading the Pictures (then called BagNewsNotes), and have admired Lorie's work for a while, especially her Above the Fold project, so it's very exciting for me to sit on this panel with them, taking a step back from our work and considering it in a broader context.

The talk starts at 6pm on 24 September 2016 at the Photoville Pavilion at 60 Water Street in Brooklyn. Here's the announcement about the event on the Reading the Pictures website, as well.

In Europe for a little fun and some exhibitions: Aug. 24 – Sept. 19, 2016

Italy. 2007.

I'll be in Europe from Aug. 24 to Sept. 18 for both fun and work. First, there's a wedding in France and a visit to Barcelona. Then, I'll be in Kaunas, Lithuania, where my work will be on display at the Kaunas Photo Festival. After that, it's Sofia, Bulgaria, for an exhibition, workshop, and lectures. Then, I'll be in Zagreb, Croatia, for an exhibition at the Organ Vida Festival. The work being exhibited at each of these festivals is my recent political work, This is the worst party I've ever been to. Thanks to the teams putting on each of these events for including my work.

If you'll be at any of these events, please say hello!

Speaking on the Around the Lens podcast – Aug. 22, 2016, at 8:30pm

I'll be on the live podcast/videochat Around the Lens tonight, August 22, 2016, starting at 8:30pm Eastern. While it is a podcast, and you can subscribe via iTunes, it's also available as a live YouTube stream, which will also be available after the fact. Here's a direct link to Around the Lens' page about the show.

I'm excited to be on the show with my friend Mark Abramson. His Two Face multiple-exposure work from the 2016 election has been published everywhere, and with good reason; the work is great and well worth seeking out.
