On the road: South Korea

Busan, South Korea
I'll be in South Korea for a few days for a corporate shoot. Can't share any details about the project, but I'll be in Busan and Ulsan. Get in touch at [email protected] if you need anything from the region.

New series: China Railway

I’ve added a new series of work, “China Railway,” to my portfolio site.  The pictures explore the country’s crowded mass transportation network, now stretched to its limits.

Tearsheet: MCM Shanghai store opening for the Wall Street Journal Weekend

MCM Shanghai for the Wall Street Journal Weekend (March 13-14, 2010)
I got a call in the middle of the night in January, two days before a trip to Xinjiang in far western China. I was surprised to hear the voice of a friendly Wall Street Journal photo editor asking if I'd be able to photograph high-fashion brand MCM's first store in China for a story about the brand's resurgence under new ownership. The billionaire owner would be there, as well as members of Shanghai's rich and famous. Not exactly my scene, but I'm always excited to see something new and different. The shoot was a long day in a single room, but it was an enjoyable challenge. I finally got a chance to see how they used the photos; I so rarely see my photos anywhere but on a computer screen, so it was especially exciting to get a copy of the paper. Big thanks go to the MCM team for being so friendly and helpful, and the editors of the Wall Street Journal for giving my photos some great play and for calling me in the first place.

Tearsheet: Time Asia – March 1, 2010 – “Tale of the Cat”

Time Asia – March 1, 2010 – Tale of the Cat
I had a pleasant call one night while in far western China a few weeks ago. Time Asia was interested in one of my images from Small Concrete Boxes to illustrate a story about tigers in China as the Year of the Tiger got under way. After hearing about it from a few friends, I've gotten the tearsheet in the mail. You can see the story at Time.com.

I’m excited to announce I’ll be presenting my series, China Everbright, at Shanghai’s Dada club on Wednesday, March 24, 2010, at around 8pm. The event was organized by the multi-talented Tim Franco, who’s been spearheading the monthly event and drawing quite a crowd. I was in Xian over the weekend and met some people from Shanghai who knew about the event and were planning on being there. If it lives up to previous photographers nights at the club, it’ll definitely be the place to be on Wednesday. Check out the facebook event page. I know Matthew Niederhauser will be there showing some work, and there will be a few Chinese photographers as well. If you’re there, please say hello.

(and a big thanks to Patrick Wack for getting me connected with the event)
