Auction and Exhibition: Youth Image Project at The Walking Man Frame Shop & Gallery in Whitefish, Montana – 5 May 2011

A young boy rides bareback on a horse in the prairie outside the Rocky Boy Powwow in Rocky Boy Agency, Montana.
One of my photos (above) from the Rocky Boy Agency in north-central Montana is on exhibit in Whitefish, Montana, through the month of May. The show is also a benefit auction for a cool organization called Youth Image Project. From the mission statement of YIP, the organization aims "to empower at-risk teenagers by providing photographic training with which they can share their personal vision, expand their skill sets and advance their life opportunities." They do this through year-long digital photography classes using donated equipment and a mentorship program. The opening reception and auction occured May 5, 2011, at The Walking Man Frame Shop and Gallery at 305 Baker Avenue in Whitefish, MT. The exhibition runs through the end of May. Wish I could have been at the opening reception, but I'm glad to support the organization. My thanks go out to Jennifer at YIP for organizing the event and to Chris Jordan for suggesting my work to her.

Tearsheet: In Silicon Valley, Investors Are Jockeying Like It’s 1999 – Wall Street Journal, 19 April 2011

Wall Street Journal website, 18 April 2011
I recently photographed Zaarly.com CEO Bo Fishback as he held meetings with colleagues and potential investors during the run-up to the May 10th launch of Zaarly.com. The website and product have already generated a huge amount of buzz and venture capital, but, in talking with Bo, his schedule wouldn't stop until well after the product launch. A picture from the shoot was featured at the top of the WSJ.com front page (seen above) and in the April 19, 2011, print edition of the Wall Street Journal. Outtakes from the shoot are available in the Recent Work section of my website: Outtakes: In Silicon Valley, Investors Are Jockeying Like It's 1999 - Wall Street Journal, 19 April 2011 You can read the story in the Wall Street Journal here: In Silicon Valley, Investors Are Jockeying Like It's 1999.

Tearsheet: The Really Smart Phone – Wall Street Journal, 23-24 April 2011

Wall Street Journal – 23-24 April 2011
Late Thursday night I got a call from an editor at the Wall Street Journal asking if I was available early Friday morning for a shoot, details would be forthcoming. I was to go to MIT's Media Lab and photograph the research of Dr. Alex "Sandy" Pentland, whose research models human behavior through the use of cell phones, and get some portraits. Just about everything that could go wrong with a shoot did. It was short notice, the subject wasn't available until close to the deadline of the shoot, time with the subject was short, the subject's research is all on computers, and the lab was nearly empty. In spite of all that, Dr. Pentland was very gracious with his time and willing to show me a few locations around the building that he thought would be a good place for a portrait. And it was great to work with a new photo editor. The story is available online: The Really Smart Phone. You can see a few more pictures from the shoot at over in the recent work section: Outtakes: The Really Smart Phone

We Chinese discussed in Metafilter Podcast #59

We Chinese was posted to Metafilter earlier this year. The moderators of the site run a periodic podcast, and happened to mention We Chinese in the current episode. It’s a brief mention, starting at about 10:40 and lasting about a minute, but, to my knowledge, it’s the first time my work has been discussed in a podcast. The podcast is embedded above, so if you don’t see the player, make sure you view this post directly on my website.
