Tearsheet: Dani Rodrik portraits in Handelszeitung

Two portraits of Harvard professor Dani Rodrik from a recent Chronicle of Higher Education assignment were recently published by the Swiss weekly newspaper Handelszeitung. Rodrik's story is particularly interesting; his father-in-law was found guilty of leading a coup in Turkey, but through Rodrik and his wife Pinar Dogan's years-long efforts to investigate the allegations and advocate on the former general's behalf, they were able to prove that he was not involved in the coup and got him exonerated.

Thanks to Dirk for getting in touch to license the photos.

Thanks to Paul at Time for picking up two of my pictures of Carly Fiorina's campaign efforts in New Hampshire for this week's issue of Time. The pictures accompany an article by Philip Elliott called "Carly Fiorina's Convenient Truths."

Event: Slideshow talk for NW Photojournalism in Seattle – Oct. 18, 2015

Matt Lutton and I will be presenting recent projects as guests of the NW Photojournalism community in Seattle on Oct. 18, 2015, at Machine House Brewery, starting at 7pm. The address is 5840 Airport Way S., Seattle, WA, 98108. Here is the facebook event page.

I'll be sharing work from my ongoing project, "This is the worst party I've ever been to," about the New Hampshire presidential primary. Matt will be showing "This Time Tomorrow," about the political and economic stagnation in Bosnia and Herzegovina as the country approaches twenty years of peace following the Dayton Peace Accords.

Thanks to Matt Mills McKnight for setting up the event.

We hope to see you there!

Tearsheet: Trump images in Le Monde’s weekend magazine M

(screenshot of Le Monde magazine website - 12 Oct. 2015)

I could not be more excited about Le Monde's publication of my coverage of Donald Trump's campaign in the paper's weekend magazine, M le magazine du Monde, on 8 October 2015. Lucy and the rest of the editorial team used eleven pictures over five pages to accompany an article about the frenzy surrounding the candidate. The article is in French and is available online here. Wish I could read it!

A few pictures from one of Trump's rallies were also published earlier this year by New York magazine's Daily Intelligencer blog.

Joining Raw View magazine as a contributing writer

Photo via Raw View

Raw View is the best photography publication being produced right now, and I'm thrilled to announce I'm joining the magazine's team as a writer. It's been around for 7 years in another form, but this year it was redesigned into something between a book and magazine. The printing is superb, there's a tremendous diversity of photography showcased, and it's an all-star team of people in the photo world putting it together.

I'm just honored to be asked to contribute. More about what I'll be doing for Raw View later, but in the meantime, spend a little time looking at the Raw View website (there are videos that go through each of the two most recent issues) and try to find a copy of it or subscribe.

Thanks to Don, Johan, and Hannamari, for asking me to join the team!

Eastreet 3 exhibition in Lublin, Poland – July 2015

One of my images from an opposition rally in Moscow, Russia, in 2012, has been selected for the Eastreet 3 exhibition and book in Lublin, Poland, opening July 10, 2015. You can see the picture, of a young policeman waiting in a bus prior to the protest outside Lubyanka, above.

The focus of the exhibition and book is generally street photography in Eastern Europe, but more specifically "a closer look at human presence within the public spaces of Eastern Europe, through the unposed, spontaneous, photos, documenting the unique moments, ideas and symbols. Photos which can help us to visually describe the region, to look at it beyond stereotypes, borders and differences, but at the same time – attempt to define Eastern Europe, show it’s current state and unique qualities. The goal of Eastreet is to create a complex and diverse portrait of the region and street photography itself, in a form of group exhibition and publication."

Of 10,000 photos submitted, 82 were chosen for the exhibition. The photos will be presented in galleries and outdoor spaces in Poland; the book will be distributed during a cultural festival that the exhibitions are a part of; the book will also be sent to international art institutions and gallerists; and, if the past is any indication, the exhibition will be presented at other festivals and galleries around the world (Eastreet 2 was shown in Belgium, France, Ukraine, Bangkok, the Angkor Photo Festival, the Kolga Tbilisi Photo Festival, and elsewhere). There will also be workshops and talks accompanying the exhibition 10-12 July, 2015.

Thanks to Eastreet 3's sponsors, including Poland's Ministry of Culture, and curators: Joanna Kinowska, Aleksander Bochenek, Tomasz Kulbowski, Grzegorz Ostręga, and George Georgiou.

Thanks also to Sean Proctor, Ian MacLellan, Kayana Szymczak, Kristy Walker, Gerry McCarthy, and Ray Whitehouse, for help with the edit I sent in to the call for entry.
