Eat it and Weep: Foreign Policy publishes Chongqing streetfood images

After ChinaFile published my essay on Chongqing's Streetfood last week, I was happy to get an email from David at Foreign Policy's Tea Leaf Nation site. He was interested in publishing the pictures, not least because he'd lived in Chongqing for a while and missed the food. You can see the feature here, Eat It and Weep: China's Mouth-Blistering Street Eats. It's a shorter selection than ChinaFile published, but there are a few different images. As you can see in the screenshot at left, the piece was also featured at the top of ForeignPolicy.com yesterday.

Thanks again to both Davids, at ChinaFile and at Tea Leaf Nation, for publishing this work.

Chongqing Streetfood for Asia Society’s ChinaFile

The Asia Society's ChinaFile site just published a story I shot in Chongqing last August on the city's streetfood. It was a great assignment, but a tough one, though not for the usual reasons. I was moving so fast from spot to spot that night that I didn't get to try any of the food. It was tough to see so much good food and not get to taste it.

Two awards in the 2014 Boston Press Photographers Association contest

Two of my images (at right) received awards in the 2014 Boston Press Photographers Association contest. The photo of Fatumah Mohamed, a refugee in Utica, New York, won 1st place in the Portrait/Personality category. I took the picture for a piece on the resettlement of refugees from around the world in Utica for Danish newspaper Dagbladet Information.

The second photo, of a horse in a field outside Belgrade, Montana, was taken on one of my periodic trips back to my home state, where I've been photographing aspects of daily life across the state over the years. It received 2nd place in the Animal category of the contest.

Last year, I received an honorable mention in the Pictorial category of the BPPA contest.

As always, congratulations to the other winners and thanks to the judges and BPPA volunteers.

Small Concrete Boxes published by BuzzFeed

I'm very excited to announce that BuzzFeed has published Small Concrete Boxes, my work on the deplorable conditions in China's zoos. While images from the series have been published over the years, this is the most complete version of the essay to be published. I couldn't have asked for a better place to publish it, frankly.

Initially I had reservations about publishing work at BuzzFeed, having really only known the entertainment side of the publication. But the website's audience is in the millions, and my goal is always to reach a wide audience with my pictures. After the pictures were published last week, I received emails from around the world expressing dismay at the conditions of the animals in the zoos and wondering what people could do to help. Unfortunately, I don't think there's a good answer to that question, but I'm glad that my pictures inspired others to take notice.

Thanks again to Gabriel at BuzzFeed for publishing the work.

I’ll be in Montana from November 7th to the 18th to spend time with family and friends and take a few pictures. Editors, on the off chance that you’ve got some needs from the area, I’ll be in the north central part of the state and possibly around Missoula.

I’m happy to announce that Feature Shoot has included a couple of my pictures in their open call and online exhibition on the subject of zoos. The image at left, from my most recent trip to China, was selected alongside an older image from my essay Small Concrete Boxes.

The gallery was curated by photographer Emma Kisiel. My work placed among the top three submissions, which includes an award of one year’s subscription to SquareSpace. Thanks to Emma for selecting my work and to Ellyn and Alison behind the scenes at Feature Shoot!
