Workers in Nanjing

Workers in China have a tough lot. They work in one of the most competitive job markets with no minimum wage and without many protections codified by Western governments. There’s no requirement for breaks, there’s no maximum number of hours of work per week, national rules governing layoffs and firings are ignored, and so on. But, one has to work, and one has to take a gamble that their employers will pay them fairly and on time. These workers in this piece, done for Map magazine, are all from outside of Nanjing, and because of that, they work under different rules than if they were official Nanjing residents. They work long hours at tough work for what amounts to, perhaps, US$150 per month.
